Breast cancer through bra?
Many women believe that wearing a bra can cause breast cancer. Is it just a rumor or is it really truth? The fact is that women in western industrialized countries are much more likely to suffer from breast cancer than in other regions of the world. But why is that? We asked once.
What is the impact of wearing a bra?
In the 1960s, the feminist women's movement warned of bras. These were used only for the display of the female breast and leech the breast tissue. Later, the fear spread that wearing a bra regularly could cause cancer. But is that really true? A few years ago, US scientists published a study in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, which concluded that wearing a bra has no effect on the risk of breast cancer.

Breast cancer more common in western countries
This opinion is shared by Prof. Jens Blohmer, head of the Clinic for Gynecology and the Breast Center at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, who explains in a message from the dpa news agency: "Pressure is not one of the possible causes of breast cancer." Women in western countries wear bras and breast cancer is more common there. "But this is not causally related," said the expert.
Socio-cultural changes as possible triggers
As with most other cancers, the root causes of breast cancer are not known. There are various theories about this. In addition to risk factors such as inheritance, alcohol consumption or age, one of them sees the so-called socio-cultural changes in the Western world as possible triggers: “Women have fewer children and later, breastfeed shorter and eat high-energy food. That could be the cause rather than wearing a bra, ”explains Blohmer. (ad)
