Campaign week for better vaccination protection: advice on measles
The supposed childhood measles also affects adults. Health experts say vaccination rates are still too low. A campaign week for better protection is now starting in Bavaria. The focus of this year's vaccination week is on measles vaccination for adolescents and young adults.

Bavarian vaccination week starts
Last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe called for an "intensification of measles vaccination efforts" in view of the significant increase in measles infections. Medical professionals have repeatedly emphasized that people dealing with small children and infants in particular should reduce the risk of infection through their own measles protection. For the little ones themselves, vaccination has been recommended by the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) for decades. The 4th Bavarian Vaccination Week is now being organized in Bavaria by the Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Impfen (LAGI) in cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry of Health and Care (StMGP) in the week from April 18 to 24, 2016.

Focus on young people and young adults
As has been announced, the focus of this year's vaccination week is on measles vaccination for adolescents and young adults. According to the information, there are still significant vaccination gaps here in the Free State. For a successful measles elimination in Germany, these gaps should be closed quickly. According to a message from the State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), the vaccination week marks the end of the StMGP's media campaign "Measles - Not a Harmless Childhood Disease", which has been running since autumn 2015. In this context, health authorities across Bavaria will offer a variety of campaigns, such as vaccination advice at the health department, vaccination information stands at the weekly market, campaigns in kindergartens, schools or vocational schools and expert discussions.

"In the interest of the health of many"
Measles vaccination - yes or no? A violent dispute between opponents and supporters has raged for years. Bavaria's Minister of Health Melanie Huml (CSU) said on the occasion of the week of action: “Anyone who gets vaccinated against measles and other diseases protects themselves and others. The decision to vaccinate is therefore not a private matter, but in the interests of the health of many, especially those who cannot be vaccinated. Opponents of vaccination should also consider this. ”In the past few years, the proportion of adults with measles diseases has increased in the Free State. According to the information, the last major measles outbreak in 2013 infected over 780 people. Almost half were 18 years or older.

Simply check measles vaccination protection
People who are not sure can check their measles vaccination protection with a simple check on a website of the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA). The immune system is weakened by measles disease. The disease usually begins with fever, conjunctivitis, runny nose and cough. According to health experts, around one in ten patients in Germany experience additional complications such as otitis media, bronchitis or pneumonia. (ad)
