Smoking and alcohol consumption shrink the brain
Tobacco and alcohol consumption are associated with numerous health risks, although very few people think of permanent impairments in cognitive performance and an increased risk of dementia. In total, the researchers evaluated the data from 700 men and 929 women with an average age of 50 from the Dallas Heart study. In addition, the cognitive performance of the participants was checked using a special test (Montreal Cognitive Assessment; MoCA). At the same time, the researchers recorded cardiovascular risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption using questionnaires to be completed.

Volume decreased in different brain regions
According to King and colleagues, measurements of brain volume made it clear that both alcohol consumption and smoking were associated with a reduced hippocampal volume. In addition, the two cardiovascular risk factors correlated with a lower total volume in the posterior cingulum and the precuneus. The total brain volume is also reduced in diabetes. The combination of tobacco use and obesity leads to a lower volume in the posterior cingulum, the combination of alcohol and overweight leads to a smaller volume in the Precuneus region. However, other cardiovascular risk factors, such as high cholesterol or triglyceride levels, have been associated with a larger volume of the posterior cingulum and precuneus. The reduced volume of the hippocampus had an impact on the results in the test of cognitive performance; of the posterior cingulum and precuneus, the scientists continue to report.

Indicators of an increased risk of dementia
Reduced volumes in certain brain regions, such as those caused by smoking and alcohol consumption, are early indicators of increased dementia risk and cognitive deficits, according to Kevin King and colleagues. Since no cure for dementia and Alzheimer's has been possible so far, prevention plays a special role.
