A high percentage of belly fat reduces life expectancy

Belly fat is generally considered to be particularly harmful body fat. A recent study commissioned by the US National Cancer Institute has now found a significant reduction in lifespan with an extremely high percentage of abdominal fat, reports the “Apotheken Umschau”. According to the health magazine, the average life expectancy for women with a waist circumference of 94 centimeters has decreased after the age of 40 (compared to women with a waist circumference of up to 67 centimeters). Men with a particularly large waist circumference (109 centimeters measured at the level of the navel) would have shown an average life expectancy shortened by around three years.

Upper limit for abdominal circumference According to the "Apotheken Umschau", the study also derived recommendations for upper limits that should be adhered to as far as possible in order to avoid negative effects on life expectancy. Accordingly, men should not exceed an upper limit of 102 centimeters and women an upper limit of 88 centimeters. (fp)
